Pain in the hepatic region

Due to the lack of pain nerve within the liver, hepatitis B generally does not cause severe pain. However, since the liver surface is covered with a layer of thin membrane which is called liver capsule and is rich in pain nerves, hepatitis-induced swelling is able to lead to liver capsule tension and thereby stimulates pain nerves. For this reason, some patients may develop discomfort and pain in the right upper quadrant and right hypochondrium. If intense pain is felt, attention should be paid to the possibility of biliary tract diseases, liver cancer, and gastrointestinal illness to avoid misdiagnosis
